Brazil is widely lauded as the best place in the world for refugees. Yet its celebrated policies veil how racism shapes the everyday politics of asylum. With rare ethnographic access inside the state, the color of asylum captures how racial meanings and hierarchies are produced through everyday bureaucratic practices and encounters. As Syrians, Congolese, and other refugees seek and obtain asylum, the state variable incorporates them into a deeply unequal racial political order. In the process, refugees learn different lessons about brazil and their place in it.
