Dr. Alexia Palomino-Cortez has successfully defended her dissertation: "Ten Cuidado: Gendered Carceral Care Work & Miseducations of Love in Latina/o Youth Intervention." Based on a year of immersive fieldwork in a California police department’s youth deterrence program, Alexia examined the gendered carceral care of these Latino/a officers who while seeking to care for youth, ultimately reproduce control and punishment. Drawing on Black feminist thought, especially the work of bell hooks, she introduces the idea of a “miseducation of love” to explain how care, intimacy, and shared experience can become instruments of discipline within racialized institutions.
