Welcome to the Department of Sociology. If you are a major or minor, we are so glad you’ve decided to make UIC sociology your home on campus. If you are not a major or minor, we invite you to look around our website and you might discover you want to join us!
The UIC Sociology program offers undergraduates a top quality education—indeed, UIC Sociology is ranked among the top 40 sociology departments in the country. As a public institution located in one of the country's most exciting cities, we are proud to be a department where faculty and students can apply their sociological lens to "real world" issues. At UIC you will have access to a faculty who focus on the larger forces of globalization as well as on the social realities of our local urban landscapes. As part of your broader education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, we believe that an undergraduate degree in Sociology will prepare you for work in a wide range of fields. We invite you to learn about the ways that we are so much more than classes by exploring our website, and getting involved in the events, resources, and opportunities the department offers.
For Our Undergraduate Majors and Minors
You may have chosen to major in sociology because of the passion you have for some of the ideas and topics you’ve encountered in your sociology classes. The department is here to help you develop the skills and networks you need to connect that passion to professional and educational opportunities. We offer:
- A colloquium series twice a month featuring cutting edge research in sociology from UIC and around the country;
- Opportunities to get involved with faculty on research projects;
- Professional development presentations (starting Spring 2016);
- Opportunities to network with alumni and professionals in a variety of fields;
- Venues to get to know other sociology students – both graduate and undergraduate.
