UIC Sociology and Latino and Latin American Studies present an exciting panel at the Hull House to celebrate new books by three local sociologists who do ethnographic work in Latinx communities:
Jennifer Jones author of The Browning of the New South, which explores the changing racial identities in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and how the presence of Latinos moved the city toward a tri-racial system.
Michael Rodriguez-Muñiz author of Figures of the Future, which looks at how U.S. Latino advocacy groups are using ethnoracial demographic projections to bring about political change in the present.
Robert Vargas author of Uninsured in Chicago, which highlights the unique struggles Latinx people face as the largest racial group without health insurance in the United States
We’ll have comments by Claire Decoteau (UIC), Kimberly Hoang (U Chicago), and Claudio Benzecry (Northwestern) followed by a discussion among the authors moderated by Julie Dowling (UIC).
