Dr. Michele M. Thompson and Dr. H. Woods Bowman Scholarship in the field of Sociology

The UIC Department of Sociology is pleased to announce the Dr. Michele M. Thompson and Dr. H. Woods Bowman Scholarship in the field of Sociology. Thanks to the generous donation made by Dr. Thompson and Dr. Bowman, two scholarships will be awarded in the 2024-2025 academic year in the amount of $5,000.00!

Eligibility & Award Guidelines
This award is self-nominated. All eligible undergraduate and graduate students majoring in or earning graduate degrees in Sociology are encouraged to apply. One student will be selected to receive the award. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average in Sociology and demonstrate academic merit. The estimated scholarship award is up to $5,000.00. The final award amount and how it will be distributed will be determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid on the basis of your unmet financial need for the 2024-2025 academic year and other relevant factors. Upon acceptance of the scholarship, arrangements will be made to transfer the scholarship funds to your student account. You must maintain full-time enrollment and academic good standing within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UIC to remain eligible for this award.

2024-2025 Academic Year Application Deadline is November 15, 2024

Application Submission Instructions:

1. Complete application.

2. Unofficial transcripts.

3. 300-500 word essay describing how your studies in sociology have influenced your
view of the world and your own plans for the future.

4. Names of TWO UIC sociology department faculty/instructors or teaching assistants
who can serve as a reference (reference letters not required).

5. Email supporting materials to Tara Gordon-Williams as one PDF to tarag@uic.edu.

6. Submit the application and all supporting materials by November 15, 2024.

7. The award winner will be notified via email.
