Research Interests: Social inequality, labor markets

William Bridges served in the Department of Sociology beginning in 1975 and retiring as Professor in
2010. In addition to published articles in the American Journal of Sociology, the American Sociological
Reivew, and Demography (among others), he was co-author of two books The Employment Relationship
(with Wayne Villemez) and Legalizing Gender Inequality (with Robert Nelson). The latter received the
Distinguished Scholarly Publication Award from the American Sociological Association in 2001.
Alongside his scholarly contributions Bridges was an active participant in the affairs of the department,
university, and discipline. He served as Head of the Department of Sociology from 1996 to 2002 and as
Senior Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences from 2004 to 2006. He contributed to
the discipline as Associate Editor of the American Sociological Review and as a member of the Sociology
review panel at the National Science Foundation.
