About

About:

Colby is a doctoral student in sociology at the University of Illinois-Chicago. His dissertation studies the impact of the Russian invasion and Ukraine’s closer ties with the West on Ukrainian discourse about gender and sexuality. He is also conducting research on weight-based stigma against men and body (dis)satisfaction and modification among people with non-binary gender identities. His broader research interests include gender and sexuality, masculinity, bodies, post-socialist Europe, and both qualitative and quantitative methods.

Prior to joining UIC, Colby graduated from George Mason University (2015) with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, philosophy, and a minor in Russian. As a part of his undergraduate honors program, he conducted interviews and wrote a thesis on virgin-shaming among men. He served as an English teaching assistant through Fulbright Bulgaria from 2015-2016 and, before moving to Chicago, was employed at a research corporation. In 2022 he received a Title VIII Fellowship for studying Ukrainian at Indiana University’s Language Workshop.
