About

Previous Degrees:

BA in French and Global and International Studies, Loyola University Chicago

MA in Sociology, University of Illinois at Chicago

Specialty areas: Political sociology, social movements, urban sociology, historical sociology, ethno-racial politics, public sociology, racial capitalism, pedagogy

Research Interests: In general, I am interested in the politics of urban development under US capitalism. Currently I am conducting research on dynamics of racial articulation in the Chicago Freedom Movement. My long term research centers ideology and organization in Chicago's postwar tenants movement. Previously, I have written about gentrification and underground music scenes using ethnographic methods. In addition to my academic research, I am committed to public sociology, critical pedagogy, and tenants’ rights.

Publications: Schmisek, John. (2020). "This must be the place: Venues and urban space in underground music scenes." Journal of Urban Cultural Studies. 7. 41-57.
